GhanaJournalists Association (GJA) President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has expressed frustration over the lack of progress in the investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale on January 22, 2025, who was assassinated six years ago.
At a news conference in Accra, Dwumfour stated that if the GJA does not receive a satisfactory update on the case by the end of March 2025, they will take the matter to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice.
Dwumfour criticized the police for failing to arrest any suspects and for their lackadaisical approach to investigating the murder. He recalled that in February 2024, the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, revealed that his office had not received any prosecutable docket on the case, five years after Suale’s murder.
Recent claims by Member of Parliament Kwame Asare-Obeng (A-Plus) that he had provided the police with information on suspected killers of Suale have raised further questions about the police’s willingness and capacity to resolve the case. Asare-Obeng threatened to publish the name of the suspect if the police did not make the investigation public.
The GJA’s demands have sparked widespread concern among journalists and advocates for press freedom, highlighting the need for a thorough and transparent investigation into Suale’s murder.
