Algerians will go to the polls on December 12 to replace long-time leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned in April, following protests.
Mr Bouteflika, has been ill after suffering a stroke six years ago.
He had already dropped plans to seek a fifth term. The election announcement was made by Abdelkader Bensalah, the interim leader amidst continuing protests by those demanding the creation of fresh institutions before any elections.
Army Chief General, Ahmed Gaid Salah, has been insisting that polls take place before the end of this year.
