Former Attorney General and seasoned legal expert, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, has criticised Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s leadership as Inspector General of Police (IGP), following his recent removal from office.

Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, broadcast live from the Ga Mantse Palace, Mr. Otoo argued that Dr. Dampare’s tenure was marked by poor leadership and a disconnect with the people he was meant to serve.

“He created difficulties and did not consider the people he was leading. He thought he was doing the right thing, but as a leader, you always need feedback,” he stated in the interview with Kafui Dey on March 17, 2025.

His comments come after Dr. Dampare’s removal as IGP, with COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno appointed as his replacement.

While some have expressed reservations about the leadership change, many within the police service have welcomed the move, viewing it as an opportunity for a shift in management style.

Reflecting on the public reaction to Dr. Dampare’s removal, Mr. Otoo remarked, “Look at the way people were jubilating. That should tell you something.”

He cited the arrest of an MP for flouting traffic regulations while rushing to an emergency meeting as an example of Dr. Dampare’s leadership style, suggesting it angered many.

“He made too many enemies, if you ask me. People were against what he was doing. He created difficulties,” Mr. Otoo said.

Mr. Otoo also questioned reports that Dr. Dampare had lobbied to retain his position, suggesting that his alleged attempts to hold onto power contradicted claims of a successful tenure.

“And if the reports we are hearing are true—that he was lobbying to keep his job, then it raises serious questions. If he truly performed well, people would have naturally called for him to continue. But that was not the case. No, he misbehaved, and I think it’s good riddance that he is out,” Mr. Otoo remarked.
