With the menace of Tramadol abuse gradually fading, a new addiction has emerged among the youth in Accra.

The source of addiction is an over-the-counter drug called Benylin which is a new trend among the youth.

Common drugs normally associated with drug abuse and its addiction include heroin and cocaine.

Benylin with Codein suppressant syrup is a cough mixture sold in pharmacy shops. This drug is commonly mixed with soft drinks and often consumed by the youth in order to get “High”.

A visit to some pharmacy shops showed that Benylin is a drug which is widely patronized by young people between the ages of 18-32.

The pharmacy attendants said there is booming sales of the drug. With the rising concern of drug abuse in Ghana, medical experts are calling on all to pay more attention to the youth to save them from going wayward.

Pharmacists are also been encouraged to keep away from selling unprescribed drugs to the public especially the youth.
