Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu in the Savanna Region of Ghana and ranking member for Parliamentary Finance and Energy committees, John Abdulai Jinapor, has issued a plea to the IMF financial supervision adviser for the Bank of Ghana, Leonard Chumo, asks him to open his eyes.

On Tuesday February 14, 2023, it was reported that the International Monetary Fund has appointed a Swiss-funded financial supervision adviser, Leonard Chumo to provide technical support to the Bank of Ghana as the country embarks on a financial discipline in order to obtain a $3 billion bailout.

During a parliamentary sitting on February 16, 2023, Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta addressed members of the House on issues regarding the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, which has received lots of backlash from the minority and other financial experts and analysts.

In his speech, the minister called on members of parliament to support the government’s financing request.

In a response to the Finance minister’s address, Mr John Abdulai Jinapor expressed his amazement at how the Bank of Ghana was able to finance the government with over $40 billion within one fiscal year.

He further expressed his happiness at the arrival of Mr. Chumo and therefore pleaded with him to be skeptical and very scrutinizing while at his work with the Bank of Ghana.

“I am not surprised that the IMF has appointed Leonard Chumo as the financial supervising Adviser to the Bank of Ghana… Let me plead with you, please open your eyes at the Bank of Ghana. I beg you to open your eyes, scrutinize the document and ensure that the right thing is done”, he said.
