Plastic Manufacturers urges gov't to suspend 5% excise duty on local products

By Roselyn Gayaglo

The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association has called on government to as a matter of urgency suspend the implementation of the 5 percent excise duty on locally manufactured plastic products.

It says the tax if not suspended will adversely affect the business community and compound living conditions of consumers.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, President of the Association, Ebbo Botchway said the excise tax is being imposed without proper consultation.

He complained that efforts to seek clarification from the Ghana Revenue Authority, GRA has not been fruitful. Mr Botchway noted that the tax in its current form is harsh and will reduce competitiveness of local manufacturers.

President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association, GUTA, Dr Joseph Obeng bemoaned the hostility in the business environment, reiterating the suspension of the five percent excise duty.
