The Ministry of Trade and Industry in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, African Union Commission and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa is organising a three-day National Conference from August  19 to 21, 2019, on the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The event is dubbed, “Harnessing the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area for a “Ghana Beyond Aid”.

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa  Akufo-Addo will deliver the keynote address.

The African Continental Free Trade Area is a free trade area, outlined in the African Continental Free Trade Agreement among 54 of the 55 African Union nations.

The free-trade area is the largest in the world in terms of participating countries since the formation of the World Trade Organization.

In July this year, Ghana was chosen by the African Union (AU) to host the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Ghana beat other competing countries including Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar and Senegal to win the bid.

As a free trade area, member countries have come together and agreed not to impose tariffs, quotas and other trade barriers on goods and services.

The agreement is expected to enlarge markets and diversify exports, particularly manufactured goods.
