The Private Commercial Transport Operators have asked passengers to brace themselves for an increase in transport fares tomorrow. This is after the group announced a 30% increase in transport fares effective February 18,2022. The Operators say they were forced to take the decision ahead of their planned meeting with the government, after fuel prices unexpectedly shot up by 30 pesewas February 16,2022.
The group says the government has indicated it will only agree to a 10 % increase in transport fares, which they feel is inadequate. Chairman of the Committed Drivers Association, Charles Danso, told Nathaniel Nartey that they initially wanted to increase the fares by midday, but decided to inform the public before it takes effect tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Head of Communications at GPRTU, Abass Imoro, has expressed surprise at the timing of the increase. He said the action smacks of disrespect to the leadership, which is engaging the government.
