Management of the Volta Aluminum Company VALCO has ordered a shutdown of the smelter following a demonstration by workers of the Company on October 31, 2022.
The aggrieved workers are calling for the dismissal of some 12 retirees of the Company who are at post. This development is not sitting well with the demonstrators.
They, therefore, held a Press Conference on November 1, 2022, to register their displeasure.
The operational smelter contains 120 cells.
Sources say it will take one hundred thousand dollars to bring one cell back to operation.
The workers have called on President Akufo-Addo to institute a Committee to investigate what contributed to the shutting down of the smelter last night.
The Local Union Chairman of VALCO, Edgar Tetteh who expressed surprise at the turn of events appealed to the President to, as a matter of urgency, dismiss the Chief Executive Officer of the Company, Dan Acheampong who they believe is behind the agitations.
