Head of the Civil Service, Dr. Evans Aggrey-Adarkoh, has asserted that the development of any country depends on the strength of its Public Service, emphasizing that no nation can progress with an ineffective and weakened public sector.
Dr. Aggrey-Adarkoh also called for the collaboration of all Public Service entities in Ghana, stating that “we can build on the foundations laid by those who came before us and create a brighter future for ourselves and the generations to come.”
In his opening remarks as Chairman for the official launch of the 2024 Open Parliament and Information Management Services Week on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at Parliament House, Dr. Aggrey-Adarkoh reminded participants that “the theme of this week-long celebration reaffirms our commitment to serving the people with integrity, openness, and purpose. We gather here to set the tone for an open parliament that will impact every citizen, and we do so with a sense of responsibility and resolve.”
According to him, Open Parliament Week serves as a reminder of their commitment to ensuring citizens are well-informed. He suggested that “by opening parliamentary procedures and making information accessible to the public, we empower individuals to understand what decisions are being made on their behalf and to hold their representatives accountable.”
The week-long celebration provides a unique opportunity not only to reflect on past achievements but also to engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of public service. “This week also serves to remind us that public participation is not merely a formality but a fundamental right. Engaging in open dialogue with our citizenry will help us craft better, more inclusive policies that truly reflect the needs of the people.”
Since 2019, the Civil Service has instituted an annual celebration and awards ceremony, offering benefits to the public, including passport acquisition (through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration), renewal of driver’s licenses, NHIS renewal, and National Identification Card issuance, among others.
Dr. Aggrey-Adarkoh expressed satisfaction that this week’s celebration is part of efforts to open Parliament to the public, promoting greater understanding and engagement in its work.
The celebration also provides departments within the Information Management Services Department the opportunity to showcase their products and services. Various exhibitions are being held by Parliamentary Departments and Civil Society Organizations throughout the event, with selected departments of the Parliamentary Service presenting displays to demonstrate the products and services they offer to the public.
This includes interactive displays from civil society organizations and development partners, who are highlighting their contributions to parliamentary democracy and good governance in Ghana.
During Open Parliament Week, a series of seminars and panel discussions on key national and global topics will take place to encourage dialogue among Parliament, civil society, and the general public.
