Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Frank Davis, Esq in a discussion on Joy Prime’s Newsfile on 15 February 2025 , expressed deep concern over the recent political turmoil surrounding the declaration of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive from justice by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The issue, which has sparked widespread debate, was a focal point on Joy Prime’s Newsfile where legal expert Frank Davis, weighed in on the matter, calling for adherence to due process and respect for constitutional governance.
Speaking on the program, he expressed concern over what he described as a troubling trend of political actors undermining each other. He criticized the lack of consistency in governance, stating, “What is wrong yesterday cannot be right today.” He emphasized that established rules and procedures must be followed to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
He particularly questioned the manner in which Ofori-Atta’s home was reportedly “attacked” during an attempt to execute an arrest warrant. While acknowledging that law enforcement has the right to act on a valid warrant, he stressed the importance of communication and decency in such high-profile cases. “This is not a petty criminal we are talking about,” he stated “Ken Ofori-Atta is a former Finance Minister, a high-profile individual known to have been under medical treatment. Was it necessary to act in this manner?”
The discussion also touched on broader issues within Ghana’s political class, with Frank Davis lamenting the lack of unity and mutual respect among leaders. He urged political actors to avoid turning governance into a series of personal vendettas, warning that such actions erode public trust in democratic institutions.
The controversy surrounding Ofori-Atta’s case has raised questions about whether the pursuit of justice is being politicized. The majority leader had earlier dismissed claims that political actors should refrain from holding each other accountable, but Davis argued that accountability must be pursued within the bounds of decency and legality.
This development comes amidst heightened efforts by the government to combat corruption through initiatives like the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, which has identified billions in misappropriated state assets. However, critics argue that such efforts risk being overshadowed by politically charged actions that undermine public confidence in anti-corruption campaigns.
