Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on government to declare a state of emergency in areas ravaged by floods following the spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams.
In a Facebook post made on Wednesday October 18, 2023, the former president said the “…scope and scale of the flooding of communities along the Volta river is bigger…”
He indicated that Ghana’s crippled economy cannot bear hence, government must declare a state of emergency and request relief assistance from our bilateral and multilateral partners.

“It is clear that the scope and scale of the flooding of communities along the Volta River is bigger that our crippled economy can bear. I recommend to Government to declare a State of Emergency in the affected areas and request relief assistance from our bilateral and multilateral partners immediately” he stated.
The controlled spillage which begun on September 15, as a result of high inflows into the dams has displaced many, submerged buildings and destroyed livelihood in the affected communities.
It is estimated that more than 101 communities have been affected.
