The running mate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 general elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has rendered an unqualified apology to the good people of Ghana for his unsavory comments about Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

His apology was contained in a brief statement issued today, July 12, 2024, a few days after his comment received heavy backlash. He explained that his comments were his personal opinion and were not intended to disrespect Ghana’s first president or any former president.

The NPP’s 2024 running mate claimed at his unveiling in Kumasi that no president in Ghana’s history including former President Nkrumah had performed better than President Akufo-Addo.

His comments generated massive backlash from the majority of the public with some demanding an apology and a retraction.

However, in a statement, the NPP running mate apologised for his comments.

“I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state; including my grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor. I note the concerns raised after my statement, I apologize sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” parts of the statement stated.
