The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) new presidential candidate, after finding mistakes and illegalities in his nomination form.
EC Chair Jean Mensa announced this at a press conference on Tuesday, November 12.
Even though the party was given a chance to fix these issues, Jean Mensa stated that certain problems could not be ignored, leading to the decision to disqualify Kubi from running in the upcoming election.
The GFP had already faced challenges when its founder and initial candidate, Akua Donkor, passed away unexpectedly on October 15. This left the party rushing to find a new candidate for the December 2024 election. The EC gave them 10 days to submit a new candidate, which resulted in Kubi’s nomination.
However, when reviewing Kubi’s paperwork, the EC found more than just minor mistakes.
Jean Mensa said that while the party fixed some errors, other issues were considered “unlawful” and could not be accepted under election rules.
She stressed that the EC’s duty to protect the fairness of the election means they cannot allow any rule-breaking, even if the party tried to make corrections.
