The ECOWAS Commission and Denmark have strengthened their long-term partnership by signing the fifth phase of the Africa Peace Programme (APP). The programme has an estimated $6 million in funding to bolster peace, security, and governance efforts in West Africa.
The agreement, signed at the ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, builds upon nearly two decades of Danish support totaling $26 million. President of the ECOWAS Commission Dr. Omar Alieu Touray emphasized the programme’s significance in enhancing regional conflict prevention, mediation, and crisis communication while addressing issues such as insecurity, unconstitutional change of government, and climate-related challenges.
Denmark’s Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Amb. Jens Ole Bach Hanson reaffirmed Denmark’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS’ mission and highlighted its dedication to peacebuilding as the country prepares for a membership on the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term.
The new funding will prioritize strengthening peace efforts, operationalizing the African Women in Conflict Prevention and Mediation Network, and promoting youth engagement throughout the region.
