Dean at the School of Graduate Studies and Lecturer at the University of Professional studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor says the strike by University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has affected the finances of the people living around the enclaves of the various Universities in the country.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show Headlines Segment, the Dean stated that, the economic activities of these communities especially Madina strives on the students of UPSA and University of Ghana, Legon.
“The finances of the people living these enclaves has come to a halt. Finances of the people living within these enclaves have come to a halt and this is what most of them are concerned with especially even when we go on long vacation. The local economy of Madina strives on the students of UPSA as well as University of Ghana. Rentals, food. It provides employment to the people of Madina “, he noted.
He however appealed to the government to address the issue.
“The government must ensure that the very governance he promised Ghanaians is well implemented by addressing this issue “, he added.
Governance Expert, Dr. Eric Oduro Osae also stated that, student rentals will be affected if the strike is not called off.
“People will go and then pay rent for one year and the one-year time is running so they don’t care about your academic calendar. You go to the Pentagon’s of the University of Ghana. You have paid for one year. Time is running, you go to KNUST. You go and pay time is running. You cannot go back and tell them because your academic calendar unfortunately was suspended”, he added.
