Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has stated that his outfit is working with private schools to ensure that local languages are taught and instilled in students.
He mentioned that there have been issues with teaching local languages in the metropolitan areas but there hasn’t been issues doing that in public schools.
He also emphasized the importance of primary education on the GTV Breakfast Show noting that it is dominated by the private sector. He advocated for more community involvement in basic level education and highlighted the government’s efforts in building STEM schools across the country, accommodating over 1200 students.
Dr. Adutwum also discussed the uniqueness of Ghana’s secondary school system, which is three years instead of six or more, found in other countries. He emphasized the government’s responsibility to provide quality education, citing the provision of core textbooks and teacher training as key initiatives.
The Minister reiterated that plans were underway to engage with Social Commentator, John B.K Amoah to translate the national anthem into 11 local languages and also introduce an eight-week course on growth mindset to boost students’ self-confidence in Senior High Schools.
Furthermore, Dr. Adutwum revealed that the Free SHS Bill, when passed, will phase out the BECE and introduce a common entrance exam. He commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for training teachers in STEM education and collaborating with private schools to promote local language learning.
