Since attaining its charter in 2020, the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has witnessed steady growth in its enrollment numbers, reflecting the institution’s rising prominence as Ghana’s premier ICT university. This growth reached a historic milestone in 2025, with a record-breaking number of new students enrolling at GCTU.
At the 34th Matriculation Ceremony, held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa delivered a heartfelt address to the newly admitted students, their families, and guardians, marking the beginning of an exciting academic journey for the freshers.
“Today is a special day for you, your families, and your guardians, and we share in your joy and glory,” Prof. Afoakwa stated. “For all of you, an interesting journey is about to begin. As Vice-Chancellor, it is my privilege to welcome you with open arms into the GCTU family as the newest members of the university community. You are our pride and joy.”

Prof. Afoakwa reiterated GCTU’s commitment to ICT education, emphasizing that the university is mandated by law to train the next generation of ICT professionals who will drive technological advancements in Ghana and beyond.
“This is not just a university; it is a hub of knowledge, innovation, and boundless opportunities,” he noted. “Education at GCTU is not only about acquiring knowledge but also about fostering honesty, respect, equality, and compassion. Our motto, ‘Knowledge Comes from Learning,’ signifies a deep understanding of the ‘what, why, when, where, and how’ of everything.”
Record Enrollment Figures for 2025
This year’s matriculation ceremony marked a historic moment for GCTU as the university formally welcomed a record-breaking 5,128 new students into its academic community.
Prof. Afoakwa provided an overview of the university’s admission statistics for the 2025 academic year:
- Total applications received: 9,284
- Total admissions granted: 7,468
- Total enrolled students: 5,128 (Highest enrollment in GCTU’s history)
- Undergraduate admissions: 4,842 students (3,467 males, 1,375 females)
- Postgraduate admissions: 422 students (405 Master’s, 17 PhD candidates)
- International students: 35 students from 12 countries
- Total student population (graduate and undergraduate): 12,618
To the international students, Prof. Afoakwa extended a special welcome, encouraging them to explore Accra’s vibrant culture and diverse experiences alongside their academic pursuits.

In his address, Prof. Afoakwa emphasized the importance of maintaining honesty and integrity as core values at GCTU. He reminded students that the university upholds academic excellence, ethical behavior, and freedom of thought, warning against dishonest conduct such as examination malpractice and sexual harassment.
“Our university prides itself on integrity, excellence, and academic freedom as key core values that guide us in principle and life,” he asserted. “I encourage all students to study hard and uphold these values throughout their academic journey.”
