Accra, Ghana – February 22, 2025
Since attaining its charter in 2020, the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has consistently expanded its enrollment and strengthened its reputation as Ghana’s premier institution for technology-driven education. The university’s rapid growth is not just in numbers but also in its commitment to delivering a superior student experience—a key factor in the expansion of the GCTU brand.
At the 34th Matriculation Ceremony, held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, emphasized that student experience and academic excellence remain central to the university’s growth strategy.
“Our University remains committed to the delivery of exciting and relevant ICT programmes that produce graduates who will be sought after by companies, institutions, and organizations for their skills and expertise,” Prof. Afoakwa stated. “GCTU stands as the beacon of innovation and excellence in ICT education in Ghana. This is not just a university; it is a hub of knowledge, innovation, and boundless opportunities.”
Technology-Driven Learning and Innovation
GCTU has embedded technology in all aspects of teaching and learning, making education more interactive, accessible, and engaging for students.
“I am very pleased to inform you that we have embedded technology in all aspects of our teaching & learning, making our quest for knowledge more interactive, easy, and fun for students. Email, course-based websites, and computer-based chat rooms are some of the technology-enabled resources used by the University,” Prof. Afoakwa said. “GCTU will empower you to continue the search for knowledge through constant learning and innovation.”
Commitment to Student Development and Excellence
During the ceremony, new students took the matriculation oath, granting them the rights and privileges of GCTU students while also committing them to uphold the university’s values of integrity, respect, and excellence.
“By this oath, you will take upon yourselves the responsibility to uphold the name of the University in everything you do, both on and off campus, and through your varied achievements, bring further honor and fame to GCTU,” Prof. Afoakwa noted. “Today, be ready to accept the challenges that come with the pursuit of knowledge, and once again, welcome to GCTU.”
Historic Enrollment Growth
This year’s matriculation saw an unprecedented student enrollment of 5,128, marking a significant increase of over 40% from last year’s average intake of 3,660 students. Prof. Afoakwa credited this achievement to the dedicated efforts of the Student Recruitment Team, Admissions Officers, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, faculty, and staff.
“With a renewed attitude to student-staff relations and an enhanced learning environment, I am confident that our enrollment numbers will continue to grow in the 2025/2026 academic year,” he affirmed.
Beyond Enrollment: Quality and Impact of Graduates
While celebrating the rise in student numbers, Prof. Afoakwa emphasized that GCTU’s success will not only be measured by its enrollment but also by the quality of its graduates and their societal impact.
“It is in this direction that the University will continue to focus on the total development of students, enhancing their knowledge, skills, and attitudes, and linking practical industrial attachment with leadership training to develop their professional and entrepreneurial abilities,” he stated.
Industry Integration and International Exposure
GCTU is committed to ensuring that at least 80% of students undergo industrial attachment, preparing them for seamless transition into the workforce.
“I urge students to engage extensively with their Heads of Departments and Deans to participate in student exchange programs with our international partners,” Prof. Afoakwa encouraged. “These experiences will allow you to learn new cultures and gain valuable global perspectives.”
Vision for the Future
As the university continues to expand and innovate, Prof. Afoakwa reaffirmed his vision to transform GCTU into the institution of first choice for human resource development in West Africa for the 5th Industrial Revolution (5IR).
“GCTU will continue to focus on the opportunities and challenges of today’s complex and interconnected world to ensure that our graduates are equipped with the expertise to succeed in this competitive landscape,” he concluded.
With its commitment to academic excellence, industry relevance, and superior student experience, GCTU is poised to strengthen its position as a leader in ICT and technology-based education in Ghana and beyond.
