Kumasi: OWASS T-Year Group refurbishes Auditorium

As part of the 70th Anniversary celebration of Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS),  the T-Year Group, made up of old students who completed the institution 50 years ago, have refurbished Burgess Hall, an auditorium of the school to a state-of-the-art facility.

The project which cost 500 thousand Ghana Cedis has been handed over to management of the school at a ceremony in Kumasi.

GBC’s Razak Baba reports that Old student of Opoku Ware School, collectively referred to as Akatakyie, an Asante word meaning “conquering heroes”, have, and continue to play immense roles in lifting up the image of the school.

These they have done in diverse ways particularly in contributing to provide the institution with the needed logistics and resources, making it one of the Grade A Senior High Schools in Ghana.

As part of the school’s 70th Anniversary celebrations, the T-Year Group, made up of old students who completed 50 years ago, have refurbished Burgess Hall, an auditorium of the school to a state-of-the-art facility.

The hall now has 300 customized chairs, with the installation of fans, sound system and projector and washrooms. The project was undertaken at a cost of 500 thousand Cedis.

The refurbished hall was formally handed over to management of the school during the Golden Jubilee homecoming event organized by the T-Year Group in Kumasi.

Activities to commemorate the event included an interaction with students on career prospects, socialization and an anniversary thanksgiving service.

Handing over ceremony

At the handing over ceremony, the Headmaster of the School, Father Stephen Owusu Sekyere commended members of the T-Year for the continued support for their alma mater.

The Project Coordinator, Mr. Gabriel Dapaah said in conformity with the best project management practices, the upgrade and modernization was split into phases to ensure quality and excellent work.

The Acting Chairman of the T-Year Group Mr. Andrew Kyei explained that the decision to refurbish the Burgess Hall to modernize it into a state-of-the Art conference is one of ”exhibiting love for their great school and willingness to do whatever it took to equip the old hall”.

A Presidential Staffer, Mr. Robert Kwabena Poku-Kyei encouraged the students to take advantage of the digital revolution to develop themselves academically. According to him, ”digitisation requires rethinking and readjustment in curricular and professional qualifications, trainers with modern/ up-to-date skills in ICT”.

There is therefore the need to tailor school curricula to expose students to new opportunities in the digital era.

The theme for the Golden Jubilee Homecoming of the T-Year group of Opoku Ware School was “Vision For Our Great School Within An Increasingly Complex and Technologically Advanced International Order, Preparing Students To Meet The Emerging Challenges Of Digitialization”.
