A lecturer at the University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC) and founder of Students Eva Kuupuolo, has expressed concern about the lack of parental involvement in the lives of university students.

Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Miss Kuupuolo stated that many parents tend to assume that their children are mature enough to handle things on their own once they enter university.

“In a typical Ghanaian society, when you’re in university, parents feel that you’re mature because you’re 18, and in Ghana, if you’re 18, you’re presumed to be an adult, So, they leave them to be on their own,” Kuupuolo said.

Miss Kuupuolo observed that this lack of parental involvement can have negative consequences on students’ mental and psychological well-being.

“They go through issues mentally, psychologically, and parents feel that ‘oh, you’re grown, you’re on your own, you’re 18, so you should be able to handle things on your own, But no, sometimes it’s even at that age that the children really need the parents,” Miss Kuupuolo said.

Miss Kuupuolo emphasized the importance of parental involvement in students’ lives, even at the university level.

“Parents should not assume that their children are too old for parental guidance and support, Sometimes, it’s the opposite they need their parents more than ever,” Miss Kuupuolo said.
