The Vice President of the National Graduate Teachers Association (NAGRAT), Jacob Anaba has said that if teachers are named and shamed for defiling students, it may break down the wall of confidence in the educational system.

Mr. Jacob Anaba said such issues are sensitive and should be managed well to make sure that students who are admitted in those schools have the confidence to go through the schools else it may lead the government to lose the fight for improving education.

He said the news on the sexual abuse of teachers is not good for the country because teachers are supposed to have high standards of morals, become role models for students and keep the young ones in check to grow to their full potential.

The NAGRAT Vice President said this in an interview with Ibrahim Kwarteng on Radio Ghana’s current affairs programme “BEHIND THE NEWS”.

Mr. Anaba said as a teacher’s union, they constantly remind themselves on the code of ethics whenever they meet. He added that per their training as teachers, they are expected to know and keep that sanctity as professionals.

He added that the gap and respect that is expected to be between the students and the teachers have been broken. He said NAGRAT has decided to conduct a research to find out the reasons and also why the issue of teachers molesting students has gone up so high recently.

He said the punishment for teachers who engage in such acts is punitive enough to deter them because they are dismissed when proven to be true.
