The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong to remain at post as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast until the Commission investigates the issues surrounding his termination. The Commission says it has not received any contrary communication from the UCC Council regarding a further two-year term for Professor Boampong.
On August 1, Chairman of the governing council of the University of Cape Coast unilaterally terminated the appointment of Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, whose four-year term began in June 2020 and officially ended on July 31, 2024.
Although his appointment was purportedly extended by two years, a notice signed by the chairman of the university’s governing council, Professor Harold Amonoo-Kuofi, declared such an extension null and void.
In a statement dated August 2, GTEC said, following the fact that previous communication of the appointment of Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong was copied the Council, there being no communication to the contrary from the Council of the University, then Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong is to remain at post until the Commission examines issues arising and communicates its position.
GTEC further instructed management of the University to furnish it with all relevant documents related to the renewal and purported termination of the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment by Friday, August 9, 2024.
