Management of Peki College of Education (GOVCO) in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region has appealed to government for infrastructural development to deal with the College’s growing student population.
The introduction of the Free Senior High School policy has resulted in an increase in the College’s students intake hence pressure on existing facilities.
The Principal of the College, Ebenezer Appah Bonney who made the appeal at Peki at the 14th Congregation of the College said the infrastructural deficits urgently need to be addressed to enhance teaching and learning.
The 14th Congregation of the Peki Training College saw 568 students graduating with Diplomas in Basic Education.
They were made up of 294 and 274 graduands representing 2018/19 and 2019/20 academic years and the last batch of Diploma students after the introduction of four year Bachelor of Education programmes in Colleges of Education.
The Principal of the College, Ebenezer Appah Bonney, said there has been a significant improvement in students’ performance in recent times due to quality of tuition and the determination of most students to excel.
He said the development was borne out of several workshops and programmes organised by management to boost the capacity of tutors.
Mr Appah Bonney said though management has over the years made progress in the areas of academic and infrastructural development, the College lacks adequate facilities to accommodate its growing population.
He mentioned inadequate accommodation for staff and students, deplorable internal road network, dilapidated structures and uncompleted facilities as some challenges that need to be fixed. Mr Appah Bonney therefore urged government to provide support to enable the College achieve its quest to be among the top notch institutions of higher learning in the country.
The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum in a speech read on his behalf said government will not relent on its efforts to implement educational reforms and infrastructural expansion at Colleges of Education to transform teacher education and training in the country.
