Public Universities to comply with 15 percent increase in academic fees

Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has asked the University of Ghana to comply with the government’s proposed 15 percent increase in academic fees. The Minister also directed other public universities, which charged above the 15 percent fee increase threshold, to make refunds to affected students.

Dr. Adutwum, gave the directive, at a meeting with the leadership of four public universities in camera to address issues concerning the 2022–2023 academic fees, which has generated discussions in the country.

Those represented at the meeting were from the University of Ghana, Legon; the University of Cape Coast, University of Education, Winneba, and the University of Mines and Technology, UMAT Tarkwa. Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Kwarteng, who briefed the media, after the meeting, said the Ministry will enforce the directive to ensure that public Universities go by the approved fee increase.

He added that the difficulty is with the University of Ghana, which is charging between 36 and 37 percent. The Ministry of Education PRO, said the leadership of the University of Ghana after the meeting requested to meet with their Council on the Minister’s directive.
