For years, students and teachers of Enobel Basic School in the La Dade-Kotopon Municipality struggled with the appalling state of their sanitation facilities. The old structure, riddled with cracks, lacked proper doors and functional plumbing and emitted an unbearable stench. Many students avoided using the facilities altogether, enduring discomfort or risking illness. This dire situation compromised both their health and education.
The tide turned when Vivo Energy Ghana, in partnership with United Way, stepped in to transform these conditions. At the commissioning of a new Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facility, both students and teachers described the project as a “game-changer” for the school. The ultramodern facility includes gender-segregated washrooms, urinals, and a dedicated washing station for teachers. Now, teachers and students can access safe, clean, and private facilities—a fundamental need that had long been out of reach.
The commissioning ceremony was led by Kilai Muasya, Finance Manager of Vivo Energy Ghana, Shirley Tony Kum, Corporate Communications Manager of Vivo Energy Ghana, and Habiba Kotoman, Municipal Education Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) for La Dade-Kotopon. The headteacher of Enobel Basic School also joined the dignitaries to officially open the facility.
Speaking at the event, Mr Kilai Muasya noted that the initiative demonstrates Vivo Energy Ghana’s dedication to health and safety, which are key focus areas for the company and the Vivo Energy Group. “Every dollar invested in hygiene and sanitation yields a return of approximately four dollars by boosting productivity and reducing health costs. This aligns with our strategic goals of enhancing the well-being of the communities we serve,” he said.
Shirley Tony Kum highlighted Vivo Energy Ghana’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability and community development. “This is not our first initiative. In the past, we have provided handwashing basins branded ‘Before Energy Ghana’ and supported other hygiene-related projects. We believe this facility will be properly maintained with the support of the school and the community,” she said. Ms Kum also mentioned clubs such as “Cycling and Green for Clean,” which promote environmental sustainability, hygiene, and sanitation among students.
Habiba Kotoman expressed her excitement over the facility’s completion, recalling the poor state of the school’s washrooms when she assumed office in 2021. “When I first observed Hand Washing Day here, I visited the washroom, and it was terrible. It became a priority issue during our budget discussions. Today, thanks to Vivo Energy Ghana and United Way, we have this modern facility, and I am overjoyed,” she said.
She added that the facility would significantly improve learning outcomes and attendance. “Previously, teachers had no convenient place to use. Some had to leave school when they felt unwell, depriving students of valuable contact hours. This facility ensures that both teachers and learners have access to proper sanitation, which will undoubtedly enhance attendance and academic performance,” she emphasised.
Ms Kotoman also revealed plans to establish a Facility Maintenance Team to ensure the project’s longevity. “We will convene a meeting with parents, Assembly members, and the Coordinating Director to develop a maintenance programme. Best practices from similar facilities in the municipality will be implemented here to ensure its sustainability,” she assured.
The headteacher of Enobel Basic School expressed gratitude to Vivo Energy Ghana, United Way, and the Municipal Education Directorate for their support. “This facility is a game-changer for our school. We thank all stakeholders involved and urge others to join hands in supporting the school to address other pressing needs, including the provision of a library and ICT lab,” the headteacher said.
Students at the school were visibly excited about the new facility, with many describing it as a dream come true. “We are so happy because we now have a clean place to use. It will make coming to school more enjoyable,” one student remarked.
The commissioning of the WASH facility marks a significant step towards promoting better hygiene and creating a healthier learning environment at Enobel Basic School. It also reinforces Vivo Energy Ghana’s role as a socially responsible corporate entity dedicated to sustainable development and community empowerment.
