St. Roses Senior High School at Akwatia in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region has won this year’s S.T.E.M Plastic Waste Management Competition held by the National Catholic Education Secretariat in collaboration with the Catholic Bishops Conference and Konrad Adeneur Stiftung Foundation for some selected Catholic Senior High Schools from Greater Accra, Volta and Eastern Regions in Koforidua.
It was on the theme: “STEM in Plastic Waste Management in Ghana”.

The participating schools were St. Roses SHS, St. Thomas Aquinas SHS, St. Peter’s SHS, Pope John SHS and Bishop Herman SHS.
Some of the Schools developed equipment that can be used to recycle plastic waste materials whiles others also used plastic waste materials to produce dustbins and other plastic materials. St. Roses SHS produced a flower pot with plastic waste material mixed with sand and plastic bricks for building as their project work for the competition.
According to the General Manager of Catholic Schools, Araba Ahima Bentum, Catholic Education in the past years have in various ways championed STEM Education in their basic and Second Cycle Institutions to help equip the up-and-coming generation with Scientific and Innovative ideas as to how they can help to keep the environment safe.
The Program Manager for Konrad- Adenauer Foundation, Lawrencia Pomaa commended the initiative.
The Winning contestants shared their excitement and looked forward to more contests.
Bishop Herman SHS placed second, St. Thomas Aquinas SHS came third, whiles Pope John and St. Peter’s SHS placed 4th and 5th positions respectively.
Awards were given to the contestants.
