The Vice Chancellor of the Koforidua Technical University, KTU, in the Eastern Region, Professor John Owusu has called on prospective students to enroll in the Fashion Design and Textiles programmes at the University to be equipped with the skilled training to be self-employed and self-reliant after graduation.
This, he reiterated will help reduce the unemployment rate among the youth in the country. The Vice-Chancellor made the call during the exhibition and fashion show of final projects of the HND students of the Fashion Design and Textiles Department of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology at the Koforidua Technical University as part of requirements for the award of their HND certificate.
In an interview with GBC News, the Vice Chancellor of the Koforidua Technical University, Professor John Owusu emphasized that the University is opened to both Higher National Diploma, HND and Bachelor of Technology, B-Tech programmes to provide graduates with competency-based training in the field of fashion design and textiles, and other skilled and competency-based programmes. Prof. Owusu hinted that though grammar school is important in nation’s development, more attention must be given to competency and skill-based training in the country to help reduce the unemployment rate.
The Pro Vice Chancellor of KTU, Professor Richard Ohene-Asiedu while commending the efforts of the Fashion Design and Textiles Department for their works, encouraged prospective students to take an interest in the competency-based training programmes.
The Head of the Fashion Design and Textiles Department, Dr. Dymphna Bakker-Edoh noted that the exhibition aims to identify potentials, gaps and challenges in the industry, generating discussions and solutions in the fashion industry.
She added that their mission is to bring nature’s beauty to life through human skills and handicrafts, promoting sustainable fashion practices and encouraging students to learn from the experience, obtain new ideas, and make connections in the fashion industry locally and internationally.
Dr. Mrs. Bakker-Edoh explained the reason behind the theme for the event.
The Exhibition and Fashion Show of the Department of Fashion Design and Textiles of the Koforidua Technical University showcased the final projects of the students as part of requirements for the award of their HND certificate. This year’s Exhibition and Fashion Show was on the theme “Aesthetic Innovation 2024, Renaissance, A Fashion Journey through Time”.
The event is aimed at equipping the graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge for the job market and also to equip them to become self-employed to help increase the employment rate in the country.
