The Tamale Technical University (TTU) has held its annual exhibition as part of the university’s efforts to translate theory into practice.
The exhibited products included garments, textiles, dressing accessories, and craft works. The event was organised under the auspices of the Faculty of Creative Arts and Technology.
Adressing the gathering, the Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts and Technology, Dr. Joana Akwele Zanu, said the faculty is poised to make the faculty the best in the area of creative Arts and Technology.
According to her, the faculty has four departments namely Fashion design, Graphic Communication, Art and innovation, and Textiles Technology.
Dr. Zanu encouraged them to be innovative so that they could sustain their businesses. She therefore appealed to the government to provide the exhibitors with some capital to enable them to set up their businesses. She also used the occasion to draw government’s attention to what she termed “fashion cemeteries.”
She said due to the influx of second-hand clothing of which about 40 percent are poorly made or cracked and cannot be resold, they are finally dumped in the sea.
She said a lot is required to be done in achieving strictly sustainable textiles in the country and appealed to the government to ensure that Ghana is not used as a dumping ground of substandard textiles.
