The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has stated that although there have been changes to the curriculum at the junior high school (JHS), there has been no adjustment to the grading system.
WAEC emphasized that there is no new grading system in place for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE contrary to) rumors.
The Head of Public Relations at WAEC, John Kapi, has revealed that the Stanine grading system has been utilized since the inception of the BECE in 1990. Kapi clarified that WAEC has not released any data regarding student pass rates or failures.
Addressing the rumors of a new grading system as “fake news,” Kapi urged the public to ignore such misinformation. He reassured that any modifications to the grading system would have involved thorough discussions with stakeholders and an official announcement.
When WAEC released the BECE results, social media was flooded with a document claiming that “with the new curriculum in Ghana, the BECE 2024 results calculation has changed,” leading to various interpretations circulating online.
Mr. Kapi responded by stating that the Stanine grading system does not allow for comparison of students’ performance across different years. He emphasized that it is misleading for some individuals to share statistics claiming to be from WAEC, as these figures are not officially endorsed by the organization.
