Three Teacher Unions, Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Association of Graduate Teachers and Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana, have declared an industrial action effective Monday December 9.

The strike is in connection with arrears owed them from 2012 to 2016. They say that several meetings with the Ghana Education Service on the matter have proven futile.

In a joint statement read by the National President of GNAT, Philippa Larsen said the Ghana Education Service is not being fair to the teachers with the excuse that there are discrepancies in the data verified and approved for payment by the Internal Audit Unit of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.

Madam Larsen said the Teacher Unions are surprised that the Ghana Education Service is not worried about the concerns of their members. She said they have no option than to go on strike.

The President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu said GES has the opportunity to get state security agencies to investigate the alleged discrepancies.

The new General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Tanko Musah said since they served notice of their strike, there has been no official communication from GES and other stakeholders on how to address their grievances.

The President, Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) Ghana, King Awudu Ali said the action of the GES is embarrassing the teachers.

He said teachers are being invited to come and justify why they should be paid the legacy arrears.
