More than 5,000 schools under trees are expected to be eliminated in the next five years through a ¢3.5 billion project.
Executive Director of Valco Trust Fund, Kelvin Yeboah who announced this said the project is to ensure that all children get quality education in a decent environment.
The project will be executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and the Ghana Education service.
Executive Director of Valco Trust Fund, Kelvin Yeboah, said it has become imperative for children in the country to have accessible and basic compulsory education. He said though compulsory education is a legal right that has been conferred on each Ghanaian child, there exists huge disparities in educational infrastructure between children from less endowed communities and those in urban areas.
He noted that the deplorable nature of some schools in the country have been so because of the lack of maintenance culture.
He called on the Ministry of Education to as a matter of urgency employ estate officers from each of the district directorates of education to oversee the maintenance of school infrastructure. Mr. Yeboah added that 18 schools would be built this year across the country.
The Director General of Ghana Education Service, Professor Kwasi Oppong Amankwah, said the ministry is going to ensure that the project comes to reality.
Valco Trust Fund is a charitable organisation set up by the Volta Aluminum Company in October 1971.
