Ghanaian international Ernest Nuamah is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate ligament rupture during Olympique Lyon’s Ligue 1 match against Lille on Saturday, April 5, 2025. The injury occurred just five minutes into the game following a ground duel with Lille defender Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Nuamah, who has been a key figure for both club and country, was forced to leave the pitch early, with Ryan Cherki replacing him. Despite Lyon’s 2-1 victory, the win was overshadowed by the worrying injury to their talented winger.

Initial medical assessments indicate that Nuamah could be out for between six to twelve months, depending on the severity of the tear and his response to treatment. A partial tear may allow for a return within six to nine months through conservative therapy, but a complete rupture would require surgery and extensive rehabilitation, potentially stretching the recovery period to at least a year.

In more severe cases, full recovery could take up to two years if complications arise. This setback is not only a blow to Lyon’s campaign but also to Ghana’s national team, which relies heavily on Nuamah’s pace, creativity, and work ethic.

For now, Lyon will have to adapt without one of their most dynamic players, but the focus remains on supporting Nuamah through this challenging period and welcoming him back to the pitch when the time comes.
