Fire broke out Sunday afternoon at Labone Senior High School in Accra, affecting three girls’ dormitories. One dormitory was completely destroyed, while the other two suffered partial damages. Fortunately, no students were harmed, as they were attending their afternoon prep at the time. However, many personal belongings, including mattresses, chop boxes, and study materials, were lost in the blaze.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded quickly, arriving at the scene within seven minutes. ADO Alex King Nartey, from the GNFS Public Relations Department, stated that the fire involved the school’s new dormitory building. Of the six dormitories on the top floor, three were impacted; one completely burned down, while the other two sustained partial damages.
The fire, which started around 1pm, was brought under control by 1:42 pm, preventing further destruction. While the exact cause is yet to be determined, initial investigations suggest a possible electrical fault. Thankfully, no injuries or casualties were recorded. Displaced students have been temporarily accommodated in the school’s assembly hall as authorities work to restore normalcy.
Nartey reassured the public that all students were safe and accounted for. Meanwhile, Labone SHS management has urged parents and the general public to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is under control. The school has committed to strengthening safety measures to prevent future incidents. As investigations continue, efforts are being made to provide relief to the affected students and assess the full extent of the damage.
