The 2024 edition of the FNB Accra Marathon concluded in grand style, bringing together thousands of participants from all walks of life for a day filled with fitness, camaraderie, and accomplishment. Held on Saturday, October 12, 2024, the marathon took runners through some of Accra’s most scenic and vibrant routes, showcasing the energy and beauty of the city.

This year’s event saw active collaboration from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ghana Education Service, and Ghana Athletics, with First National Bank (FNB) serving as the headline sponsor. The marathon attracted both elite athletes and amateur runners, reflecting the event’s growing popularity as one of Ghana’s premier sporting events. With close to 5,000 participants, the marathon featured various categories, including a 15km race dubbed the Junior Run, a 5km kiddie run, and a corporate 5km run. This allowed individuals of all fitness levels to take part, making it a truly inclusive affair.

A Thrilling Competition
The 15km marathon was the highlight of the day, with athletes from Ghana and across the globe competing for the top prize. The 15km and 5km runs started from the Accra Sports Stadium and Old Regent University, respectively, and ended at the Dansoman Keep Fit Club grounds.

Ghanaian runner and student of the University of Ghana, David Nakosi, emerged as the Junior Run champion, crossing the finish line ahead of Emmanuel Kwarteng and Inusa Alhassan. In the female 15km category, Joyce Ayaaba, another Ghanaian, took the title, followed by Sherifa Moro and Elizabeth Agyei.

The kiddie 5km run was won by Emmanuel Oppong in the boys’ category, with Ziem Festus and Shadrack Ahenkorah taking 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively. Asieduwaa Irene won the girls’ category, with Esther Yakubu and Ellen Boadu following in that order.

The corporate marathon (5km fun run) also saw participation from casual runners, including families, corporate teams, and fitness enthusiasts, adding a festive spirit to the event. Ali Mohammed clinched first place in the men’s category, while Alberta Yeboah dominated the women’s race, showcasing remarkable endurance and speed.

Community Spirit and Charity
Winners of the marathon received cash prizes, while other participants were presented with souvenirs as a token of appreciation for their involvement.

Corporate sponsorship from First National Bank (FNB) and other local and international brands helped ensure the marathon’s success. The event also featured post-race entertainment, food stalls, and health clinics, creating a family-friendly atmosphere that drew in large crowds.

Promoting a Culture of Fitness
The FNB Accra Marathon continues to play a crucial role in promoting a culture of fitness and healthy living in Ghana. It serves as a platform to encourage Ghanaians to embrace physical activity while fostering a sense of unity and achievement.

Remarks
Chairman of the Dansoman Keep Fit Club (DKFC), Rat Benjamin Ahulu, expressed appreciation to sponsors and other stakeholders for making the event possible. He promised to elevate the Accra Marathon into an international, national, and inter-schools event.

Hon. George Blay, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly, addressed participants on behalf of MP Ursula Owusu-Ekuful. He announced the construction of an astroturf at the Dansoman Keep Fit Club pitch, slated for completion by the end of the year.

Speaking at the event, FNB Managing Director Mr. Warren Adams, who led the company’s delegation, highlighted the bank’s commitment to community health initiatives and expressed gratitude for the support shown by participants and stakeholders. He also presented awards and cash prizes to the winners.

PRO of the Dansoman Keep Fit Club, Isaac Yaotey, expressed appreciation to other sponsors, including Hollard Insurance, Yango, Bel Aqua Active, Indomie, Class House, Sanlam Allianz, and Dano Milk. He commended the media, particularly the MultiMedia Group, GHOne TV, Max FM/TV, GTV Sports Plus, and Graphic Sports for their unwavering support toward the event.

Looking Ahead
As the sun set on another successful marathon, participants were already looking forward to next year’s edition, with hopes of even greater participation and an expanding international presence. The FNB Accra Marathon has once again solidified its position as a must-attend event on the Ghanaian sporting calendar, uniting athletes, families, and the community in a celebration of health and achievement.

The FNB Accra Marathon 2024 will undoubtedly be remembered as a day of triumph, togetherness, and the power of sport to inspire and bring communities together.
