Gabon is set to hold presidential election in April according to an announcement made by the military government during a cabinet meeting this week. “ Under this decree, the election will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025” a government statement issued late Wednesday after a Ministerial cabinet meeting. This election represents a pivotal moment in the country’s political landscape, following the military coup that took place in August 2023, which resulted in the ousting of long-time president Ali Bongo.

Interim leader Brice Oligui Nguema, who assumed power after the coup, is widely expected to run for the presidency. His leadership has been marked by promises of reform and a return to democratic governance. However, the military’s role in the electoral process has raised concerns among political analysts and opposition groups regarding the potential for bias and manipulation.

The government has implemented changes to the electoral framework, allowing military personnel to participate in elections. This decision has sparked debates about the integrity of the upcoming vote and whether it can be conducted fairly under the current circumstances. Critics argue that this could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and lead to further unrest.

Voting is scheduled to take place from 7 AM to 6 PM local time, with expectations of high voter turnout as citizens seek to have their voices heard in shaping Gabon’s future. The international community is closely monitoring developments in Gabon, emphasizing the importance of a transparent and credible electoral process.

As Gabon prepares for this crucial election, many are hopeful that it will pave the way for a return to stability and democratic governance in a country that has experienced significant political turmoil in recent years.
