Liberia’s President George Weah has suspended the Deputy Information Minister, Eugene Fahngon, for fuelling ethnic divisions by referring to descendants of freed slaves as “Congo Liberians”.

President Weah maintains his government is committed to a united country, with zero tolerance for “divisive politicking or tribalism”.

Mr. Fahngon in a social media post said anti-government protest planned for June 7, had been orchestrated by so-called “Congo Liberians”, a reference to descendants of freed slaves who returned from the US.
