The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a stern warning to heads of basic schools against collecting unauthorised registration fees for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). In a statement released on February 12, 2025, the GES management instructed school heads to immediately cease this practice, emphasizing that these charges are unapproved.

The GES has also directed Regional Directors to ensure that District Directors monitor the situation and caution all Heads of Basic Schools. According to the statement, “Any Head who has collected such unauthorized fees is required to refund the monies promptly. Failure to comply will result in sanctions”.

The GES further reminded school heads that late registration of candidates will not be permitted, and urged them to ensure all eligible students are registered within the period set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The statement, signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of the Public Relations Unit of GES, urged the general public to take note of the directive. The GES has reiterated its commitment to fairness and accountability, and school heads found guilty of imposing such fees will face strict penalties.

The situation will continue to be monitored to ensure compliance and protect students from unjust financial burdens.
