Ghana has recorded 4,155 suspected cholera cases since October 2024, with 35 deaths reported as of December 23, 2024.
This was revealed by Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), in a statement on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
The Western Region remains the hardest-hit area, recording 17 out of the 35 deaths.
To combat the outbreak, an oral cholera vaccination campaign was carried out between November 30 and December 19, 2024, in hotspots such as Awutu Senya East, Ahanta West, Effia-Kwesimintim, Sekondi-Takoradi, and Shama. Out of 792,482 eligible people, 662,906 were successfully vaccinated.
Dr. Kuma-Aboagye noted that the vaccination campaign has led to a steady decline in cases in these areas, with Awutu Senya East reporting no new cases since the exercise.
He urged the public to seek immediate medical care if they experience diarrhoea or vomiting and advised citizens to practice good hygiene, including drinking clean water, eating properly cooked food, washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and washing hands with soap under running water regularly.
As the Christmas season approaches, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye emphasised the importance of adhering to these hygiene measures to prevent further spread of the disease.
