More than four thousand breast cancer cases were recorded in the country last year. These keep increasing every day.
A Senior Medical Officer, at the University of Ghana Hospital, Dr. Dan Bazaadut who disclosed this to Radio Ghana attributed the increase to the reluctance by a lot of women to visit the hospital but instead resort to drugs they find on the internet.
He, however, cautioned that those drugs are very harmful and called on women to visit the hospital regularly for check-ups and early treatment.
This, he said will help reduce the prevalence.
The global cancer burden is estimated to have risen, and there are projections that Cancer rates could further increase by 50%, with more than one million cases worldwide. This is why awareness creation on the disease is necessary for early detection and treatment.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness on the disease.
Sharing knowledge of the disease on GBC’s Radio Ghana, a Senior Medical Officer at the University of Ghana Hospital, Legon, Dr. Dan Bazaadut, said breast cancer is sometimes found when symptoms appear, but many women with the disease show no symptoms.
This is why regular breast cancer screening is important. He said early detection and diagnosis can help save lives.

He however cautioned women to desist from self-treatment as that would harm their breasts.

The hospital, Dr Bazaadut, said is carrying out advocacy this awareness month.

A Matron, at the Vicom Specialist Hospital at Dansoman, Bernice Bissue, said it is advisable to educate husbands to help their wives visit the hospital on regular bases.

As we observe breast cancer awareness month 2019, let’s not be ignorant but help to increase attention and support for the disease, as early detection saves lives.
