In a devastating turn of events, what should have been an exciting football match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC ended in tragedy on February 2, 2025. Post-match violence claimed one life and led to three arrests, sending shockwaves through Ghana’s football community.
According to a press statement, Ghana Police Service has detained three suspects: Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Kyeremeh Joseph. During a search of Owusu’s premises, police discovered incriminating evidence including two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP 23 pistol containing 15 rounds of ammunition.
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector-General of Police, has expressed his condolences to both the bereaved family and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC’s leadership. He assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway, with a specialized team from the Criminal Investigation Department now supporting local law enforcement in the Bono Region.
The incident has sparked serious concerns about spectator safety and security at sporting events. The three suspects remain in police custody, cooperating with investigators as they piece together the events that led to this tragic outcome.
