The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has sounded the alarm over the deteriorating state of sports in Ghana, labeling it “sick” and in dire need of rejuvenation. His comments come in the wake of the national football team’s recent failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a setback that he believes has had a ripple effect on various sporting disciplines across the country.
During an interview on Asempa FM, Mr. Adams, who also represents the Buem constituency in Parliament, underscored the urgency for collective action to restore Ghana’s sports to its former glory. “Our football is in a sorry state,” he stated, reflecting on the nation’s proud history as a four-time African champion. “The only thing we have is past glories, but the current state of our sports is nothing short of alarming.”
The Minister emphasized that the revival of sports in Ghana cannot be achieved without the active participation and investment from Ghanaians. He called on citizens to rally together, voicing a passionate appeal for collective involvement in the sporting sector.
“I want to appeal to Ghanaians to get involved and invest to help revive our sports because our sports is sick and needs to be healed,” he remarked, stressing the importance of love and support for the country’s athletic endeavors.
Mr. Adams pointed out that the struggles of the senior national football team have adversely impacted other sports as well.
He noted, “Our senior national team is sick, and it has affected all other sports,” making it clear that a holistic approach is necessary to address the issues plaguing the entire sports ecosystem in Ghana.
