The Principal Electrical Engineer at the Ghana Grid Company Limited, Abdul Samed Ibrahim says Burkina Faso will soon benefit from hundred megawatts of electricity supply daily from Ghana after the completion of the 225 kilo Volt KV, Bolgatanga Ouagadougou interconnection project.
According to him the project which is also under the west Africa power pool project has managed to export 50 to 65 megawatts of power to Burkina Faso through its existing 161 KV network.
Mr. Ibrahim asserted this when the world bank team paid a working visit Aboadze thermal plant in the Shama district to inspect some of the project its has financed in the Western region.
A team from the World Bank Team is in the Western Region to inspect completed project that the bank has funded.
Briefing the media at Aboadze in the Shama District, the Country Director of the World Bank for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Henry G.R. Kerali said the team will inspect the secondary education improvement project, west Africa power pool project at Aboadze substation, Takoradi lands commission office, Kikam Technical Institute, Esiama water supply system, Elubo water supply system, Abidjan-Lagos road corridor, Anyanfuri road and Takoradi Technical Institute. According to Mr. Kerali the team will also look at ongoing projects.
The team later inspected the West Africa power pool, WAPP which is the first phase of the inter-zonal Transmission Hub project.
Mr. Kerali said the project is to reduce the cost and improve security of electricity supply to Burkina Faso, while increasing Ghana’s electricity export capacity. According to him, it is a private-sector led initiative to improve the system.
He said the project cost One hundred and eleven million US dollars, it was jointly financed by the International Development Association IDA -World Bank, Agency Franchise de Development AFD, and European Investment Bank EIB. Ghana contributed two point Five million US dollars whilst Burkina Faso contributed Three point four million dollars.
The Principal Electrical Engineer of GRIDCO, Abdul S. Ibrahim said Ghana is still supplying power to Burkina Faso.
He said the West Africa power pool comprises the construction of Circa 200 kilometers of 225 kilo volt transmission line, construction of electricity injection source in Navrongo, Bolgatanga, two substation and delivery point in Ouagadougou.
The project also includes the installation of system control and data acquisition system, provision of electricity supply to 25 village and towns close to 225 kilo volt transmission line.
According to Mr. Ibrahim it also comprises of the Ghana transmission capacity with the integration of 200 mega volts and 330 kilo volts phase shifting auto transformer.
