The Parliament of Ghana has approved an allocation of GH₵65,899,456 for the services of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the year ending December 31, 2025. The budget approval came with concerns from Members of Parliament (MPs) over the lack of allocation for maintaining sports infrastructure in the country.
According to the Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, the Accra Sports Stadium will undergo a much-needed renovation after Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad.
However, MPs like Dominic Nitiwul and Frank Annoh-Dompreh raised concerns about the need for dedicated funding for sports infrastructure maintenance.
Member of Parliament (MP) for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, emphasized the importance of allocating more funds to the Ministry, stating that “we cannot leave it to the discretion of the Finance Minister or the President to say we will do it.”
Mr Nitiwul suggested that the leadership should find ways to reallocate funds to support the Sports Ministry’s capital expenditure. He stressed that the Ministry is crucial for Ghana’s sports development.
The Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, also called for a dedicated budget line for maintaining sports facilities, illustrating the significant investments made in these infrastructures.
The approved budget has sparked concerns about the government’s priorities in sports development. While the allocation of GH₵65.9 million is a significant amount, the lack of dedicated funding for infrastructure maintenance raises questions about the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s sports development.
