Officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at the Bunkpurugu Sector Command in the North East Region have intercepted 25 bags of cocoa beans being smuggled into neighbouring Togo through an unapproved route.
The operation, which took place around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, followed a tip-off, according to a statement signed by Rev. Edwin Adjetey Doku (ACI), Officer-in-Charge of the Bunkpurugu Sector Command.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the OIC and his Operations Commander led a team of eight officers to lay an ambush at the Kauk border community, where the smuggling attempt was foiled.
During the operation, two unregistered motor kings used to transport the cocoa beans were impounded, and approximately 25 individuals on board the vehicles were arrested.
The seized cocoa beans are currently in the custody of the GIS at Bunkpurugu and are expected to be handed over to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority for further investigation and action.
