The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), is performing eye surgical operations for some 58 residents of the Manhyia South Constituency to correct defects in their sight.
The operation is being sponsored by Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Aspirant for Manhyia South, in the Ashanti Region.
The health screening formed part of activities marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The beneficiaries were identified at an outreach held Saturday, in collaboration with the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Clarion Medical Center, in Accra.
The patrons underwent thorough medical checks, including free eye tests.
Mr Awuah, seeking to step in the shoes of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, now the running mate of the NPP Flagbearer, also took the opportunity to interact with the electorate, highlighting some of his policies and aspirations when elected.
He explained the rationale for the screening and the free eye care service for the residents, who included elderly men and women.
“From my house to house engagements in the constituency, I noticed that almost every house I went to, there was at least one person with cataract…,” he explained to the Ghana News Agency.
“Therefore, in undertaking a general health screening, we also decided to undertake eye examination for the residents of Manhyia South Constituency.”
Some beneficiaries thanked Mr Awuah for supporting the initiative and called on other electorates to give him the nod in the December polls.
Maame Malley, a resident, who attended to her mother at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, thanked the politician and medical service providers for the intervention.
“Ideally, I should have paid GH¢3,000 for the surgery but I was told the cost had been absorbed. I wish to express gratitude to our incoming MP for the good work he has begun…”. she stated.
“I know he will do more when he wins the seat and I urge all voters in the constituency to turn up and vote massively for Mr Awuah,” she said.
