Minister-designate for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has promised to investigate the controversial $77 million ambulance maintenance contract if approved by Parliament.
Speaking during his vetting on Friday, January 31, 2025, Mr. Akandoh expressed concerns about the contract between the Ministry of Health and the company responsible for maintaining Ghana’s ambulances.
“I have received a briefing on the issue. If approved by the committee, I will investigate this matter thoroughly,” he said.
He revealed that the same company was awarded a contract to purchase 307 ambulances for $41 million. However, a later maintenance contract for the same vehicles was signed for $77 million over five years—almost double the cost of purchasing the ambulances.
“The rate of vehicle deterioration does not justify such an amount. I intend to launch an investigation into this arrangement,” Mr. Akandoh added.
His comments have sparked fresh concerns about transparency and accountability in government contracts. Civil society groups and stakeholders have previously questioned the high costs of Ghana’s emergency medical services.
Mr. Akandoh’s pledge to probe the deal suggests possible reforms to ensure the government gets value for money in future contracts.
