The Bolgatanga municipal veterinary officer, Mr. Ransford Okornor, has disclosed that they have exhausted the 11,320 vaccines received three weeks ago.

He said a mass vaccination exercise has since been carried out in the municipality to vaccinate ruminants against the anthrax outbreak.

According to Mr. Okornor, “Only 11,320 out of the 50,000 animals estimated have been vaccinated against the anthrax disease. The reasons are that the veterinary services department in the municipality received just 11,320 vaccines and have since exhausted them all through a mass vaccination exercise.”

Mr. Okornor said the quantity of vaccines received is woefully inadequate and hopes that they are supplied with more vaccines.

“We are waiting for more vaccines to arrive. Normally, we do an eight kilometers radius vaccination and we do not have some cases of anthrax in those areas that we have covered. But for now, we do not know when the next consignment is coming.” Mr. Okornor narrated while urging all animal owners to be vigilant and report any cases of suspected anthrax.

In June 2023, there was a ban on the consumption of ruminants in the Upper East Region as a measure to reduce the influx of the anthrax.

There was also a restriction on the movement of sheep, goats, pigs, and cows and their products in the region.
