A Family Physician and Palliative Fellow-In-Training, Dr. Abena Foriwaa Sarpong, has encouraged women to proactively undergo breast screening and not hesitate to seek professional medical advice for any concerns by shedding light on breast cancer awareness and the significance of palliative care.
In an interview on the GTV Breakfast Show, she advised that early detection is crucial for effective treatment and highlighted the availability of palliative care in Ghana for symptom management from the time of diagnosis.
According to the expert, finding a lump in the breast may be alarming, but not every breast lump indicates cancer. Therefore, she encouraged women to consult healthcare practitioners for a proper evaluation.
“Check if you’re not too sure, and don’t be afraid to come in if you find something. Not every breast lump might be breast cancer, so if you’re not sure, come into a health facility and have a healthcare practitioner actually examine you,” she advised.
The expert further explained that palliative care plays a vital role in supporting patients with breast cancer. It can be initiated at the time of diagnosis, offering holistic care that addresses not only physical symptoms but also emotional and psychological well-being.
“So healthcare physicians should refer patients for palliative care; we have palliative clinics. It’s not just about talking about palliative care but about symptom management,” she added.
Therefore, to ensure patients receive the best care possible, healthcare providers must refer patients for palliative care services.
