A renowned expert from MediMoses, Dr. Prince Osei, has provided an enlightening discussion on the cervix and its critical role in women’s reproductive health on the GTV Breakfast Show on 21 January 2025. The segment, aimed at raising awareness, delved into the cervix’s functions, importance, and how to maintain its well-being.
Dr. Osei described the cervix as the “neck” of the uterus, explaining its position at the lower part of the womb, connecting the uterus to the vagina. He emphasized its essential role in reproduction, protection, and childbirth, describing it as a gateway to fertility and a barrier against infections.
He outlined the cervix’s function in regulating menstrual blood flow and facilitating sperm passage during fertilisation. During ovulation, cervical mucus aids sperm movement, enhancing fertility. He also noted the cervix’s ability to protect a developing fetus during pregnancy by forming a mucus plug to block harmful bacteria. During labour, the cervix thins and dilates, enabling the baby’s passage through the birth canal.
Dr. Osei stressed the cervix’s contribution to overall vaginal health, explaining how its secretions help maintain a balanced pH level, reducing the risk of infections and promoting reproductive wellness.
The discussion also addressed preventive measures to protect cervical health. Dr. Osei urged women to undergo regular Pap smears and HPV tests to detect early signs of cervical cancer. He recommended HPV vaccination to protect against high-risk virus strains linked to cervical cancer. Safe sexual practices, he added, are vital in reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections that can harm cervical health.
He also encouraged viewers to seek medical advice if they experience symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, pain during intercourse, or unusual vaginal discharge, as these could indicate potential health concerns.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Osei underscored the cervix’s often-overlooked role in women’s health. He called for increased awareness and proactive measures, highlighting the importance of regular check-ups, screenings, and healthy practices to ensure long-term reproductive well-being.
This segment served as a crucial reminder of the need for vigilance and care in safeguarding cervical health, empowering women to take charge of their reproductive wellness.
